District Governor's Notes

Dear Sisters;

Our 3rd Annual Joint District #12 & 13 Convention, has come and gone. Our special guests were Grand Vice-President and District #13 Liaison Elaine Sampanis from West Chester, OH.  She not only served as liaison to District #13, but also filled in for our liaison Nicky Stamoulis who could not attend our convention due to other obligations.  We were also honored with the presence of AHEPA’s Supreme Counselor, John Galanis from Milwaukee, WI, who served as our MC at the Governor’s Dinner.

Our convention was a good time, and this sentiment was shared by all I spoke with.  It was also, a time to see old friends, and meet new ones.  A time to share fresh ideas, review old ones, revise some and leave some alone.

Most of all, it was a time to learn.  I must say that I learned something from everyone.  Be it some aspect of running a District #12 convention meeting, or how to earn money for the district.  For me, the best part of the convention was that I learned about people.  Not only did Grand Vice-President Elaine Sampanis amaze me with her knowledge, but her calm delivery and friendliness, set me at ease, as I am sure she did for others.

We need to be proud because we are part of the AHEPA family.  Our family members are a very courteous, considerate, and loving group of men and women of all ages.  Those of whom I spoke with for any length of time were very generous with their knowledge and their life experiences.  Brothers and Sisters, from both districts were always approaching me with a smile, kind words, and if I was fortunate enough they even spent time with me sharing their thoughts and ideas on how to improve our family.   By the end of the
convention, we were passing email addresses and phone numbers, hugs and kisses.

If any of our District #12 Sisters, have contact with our District #13 Sisters, please extend my deepest gratitude for all they did to make our 3rd Annual Joint District #12 & 13 Convention a successful one.

During our business meeting, the Auxiliary Committee arrived with some very good news.  The AHEPANS have commissioned a new webmaster that is going to charge them $595 for 5 years.  I said them, because the Auxiliary Committee also announced that the AHEPANS will absorb the total cost indefinitely.  In other words, we will not incur any cost for our portion of the website.  The website address will be www.ahepa-12.org, and it should be up and running by this fall.  Please send all your chapter information, photos and events to me at evanthea@yahoo.com.

The District By-Laws were approved as amended.  As soon as the amendments are added and it is retyped, they will be sent to each chapter.

Our Merrillville Sisters graciously volunteered to host our 2009 Fall Workshop, date and Location to be announced.  Ironically, at the same time, our Merrillville Brothers offered to host the 4th Annual Joint AHEPA – Daughters of Penelope Convention for 2010.   They may need our help, please ask them.

I will be attending the Supreme Convention in San Francisco with Jerry (AHEPA District #12 governor).  Angela Magrames from Gaia Chapter #60 will also be attending, and is planning to run for Supreme Governor.  Please give Sister Angela your support.

Sincerely in Theta Pi,

DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE DISTRICT #12 Cookbook

In 1963, the District Lodge under took an enormous project to raise money for the Daughters of Penelope District Scholarship Fund. This was the beginning of “Penelopian Culinary Favorites” cookbook. This collection of “favorite” Greek and non-Greek recipes from the members of our organization benefit our scholarship fund. The cookbook has also become a treasure of recipes handed down from grandmother to mother and to daughter.

In preparing this book, many secret recipes were revealed, some that required translation and adaption to our present day measurements. Comprehensive instructions were written enabling
the American-born Hellene, young bride or even those not familiar with typically Greek recipes to
prepare the traditional and delicious dishes of Greece easily.

For more than forty years, our district has sold the “Penelopian Culinary Favorites” continuing to provide a source of income for the Daughters of Penelope Scholarship Fund. To purchase a
copy of this cookbook, please contact your local Hoosier Daughter’s chapter or Cleo Bizoukas,
3716 Boulevard Drive, Highland, Indiana 46322 (219) 924-5426. The cookbooks are $20 each.
