DOP ATHLETIC AWARDS
As the Supreme Convention gets ever closer, remember to give applications to those who may be eligible for either the ZOE CAVALARIS AWARD or the ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME AWARD.
The Zoe Cavalaris award is for athletic achievement in the past year by a woman of Hellenic descent in high school or college sports.
APPLICATION DEADLINE is MAY 1, 2009.
The Athletic Hall of Fame Award is given to recognize a Hellenic Woman of any age, that has had significant achievements in the area of athletics, amateur or professional.
APPLICATION DEADLINE is MAY 15, 2009.

Established in to promote educational, cultural, scholarship and civic programs; to foster research in art, education, science and public affairs, to promote social, ethical, philanthropic, cultural, educational and intellectual interests of the members of the Daughters of Penelope and to preserve and promote the ideals and traditions of Hellenism. Penelope House Family Violence Center -
Penelope House, the first shelter for battered women and children in Alabama, was founded under the direction of the Daughters of Penelope Chapter in 1978. Penelope House was one of the first such shelters in the nation and has served as a model for many shelters in the U.S. Penelope House helps victims of domestic violence to gain social and economic independence through shelter, counseling, advocacy and referral to community resources and agencies. Victims are provided a safe place to stay while assessing their life situation and setting goals for the future. Financial support to Penelope House helps saves lives of victims of domestic violence. Penelopean Foundation Day Care Center -
This Center was founded in 1957 from the initial idea of members of the Karyatides #271 Chapter in Athens, Greece, to exhibit philanthropy in the community. The Center is now a day care center for children of working or incapacitated mothers of low income or no income in Athens. The Center hosts babies from 3 months old to pre-school age of 5 1/2. More than 3,000 children have received care, attention, and education in the Penelopean Day Care Center. This Center is a role model in Greece because of the high level of service and care given to the children who come each day. Funds are needed to continue the operation of this center. University of Miami, Sylvester Cancer Research Center (Papanicolaou) -
This dedicated comprehensive cancer center opened, is a world leader in the search for a cancer cure. The Daughters of Penelope are members of the Grand Founders of the Giving Societies of the Sylvester Cancer Center, where our funds are given. The Center is involved in hundreds of research initiatives and is recognized as one of the top cancer treatment and research facilities, with advanced cancer-fighting diagnostic and treatment services. Part of this Center, formerly the Papanicolaou Canter Center, was named for Dr. George Papanicolaou, who through his research left an impressive legacy introducing the world to the women's life saving test called the "Pap Smear".
